Armada Font Family. Tobias Frere-Jones began Armada in 1987. An experiment in algorithmic design, Armada follows the verticals and flat arches so often to be found in the architectural geometry of cast iron and brickwork in nineteenth-century American cityscapes. All of the weights and widths of Armada were drawn by Frere-Jones, offering a full display series of remarkable richness, all variations in a truly architectural theme and discipline. Among other uses, Armada is recommended for Magazine and Corporate use.
Design Philosophy: It was an experiment in algorithmic design, inspired by the vertical and flat-arched geometry found in 19th-century American industrial architecture (cast iron and brickwork).
Variety: The specimen showcases the typeface’s extensive range of weights—from Black to Light—and widths, including Compressed, Condensed, and Normal.
Visual Style: It is a sans-serif characterized by its mechanical, architectural rigidity and very narrow proportions in its compressed versions.
