Anterior Font Family

Designer: Francesco Canovaro

Anterior Font Family is a contemporary sans serif typeface that integrates two key typographic paradigms of the 20th century: the functional rigor of neo-grotesques and the geometric formalism of early modernist design. Drawing on the structural clarity of Max Miedinger’s Helvetica and the abstract visual logic of Paul Renner’s original Futura, Anterior establishes a synthesis between rational legibility and geometric expressiveness. Designed by Francesco Canovaro with contributions from Filippo Sgarlata, Anterior combines the disciplined modulation and optical refinement typical of International Style grotesques with the circular symmetry and modular construction of geometric sans serifs. The result is a type system characterized by calibrated curves, clean terminals, and balanced proportions, suitable for both display and text use across digital and print environments.

The typeface includes a comprehensive set of stylistic alternates, expanding its functional and aesthetic range. Notably, the Renner set offers a faithful interpretation of Paul Renner’s early Futura drafts, featuring strictly geometric forms constructed exclusively from circles and rectangles, with orthogonal junctions and minimalist detailing. This stylistic set introduces a distinctive, high-impact variant particularly suited for editorial, branding, and signage applications requiring strong visual identity. With its blend of systematic construction and subtle detail, Anterior is not a revival but a contemporary re-engineering of modernist principles, offering designers a precise, versatile tool rooted in typographic tradition yet adapted for the demands of present-day communication.
